Constellation Points
NEW YORK
153 East 53rd Street,
New York, NY 10022

Sue Gurnee’s second solo exhibition this year in New York is on display from September 1 through October 30th on two floors of the Galleries at 153 East 53rd Street, in Manhattan. Four large canvas panels measuring over 6 feet high and a total of 67 feet wide in a pictorial manner portray recollections of places where people and nature unite.

In an aesthetic sequence of garden panoramas, carefully layered washes and photographic techniques combine to reveal views of the Hudson River; a pergola resplendent with cascading magenta morning glories; a profusion of red daisies amid yellow dahlias and the indication of joy from two children having collected an abundant harvest. The format of these works is reminiscent of treasured family tapestries and handmade ancestral quilts.

The Artist Reception for Constellation Points NEW YORK will be held October 15th from 6:30 – 9:30 pm at the Galleries at the Atrium Shops and Cafes. The Atrium is open to the public seven days a week from 7 am to 12 pm.

Sue Gurnee is available at the Atrium on September 1st from 6 pm until 8 pm to consult with media representatives.
Adjacent to the Gallery are Hillstone Restaurant, Barnes & Noble, Market Café, Cucina Gourmet, as well as other specialty shops.
Sponsored by Boston Properties and Midtown Art’s Council.

Constellation Points
BERLIN
Alexanderplatz TV Tower

During The Annual Festival of Lights, a Constellation Point depicting the splendour of light and color is on exhibit from October 13 – October 30, 2010.

Constellation Points
MADRID
Calle Huertas

Concurrently, while four Constellation Points hang at the New York landmark - known by many as the former Citicorp building, another Constellation Point is placed by the artist in Berlin in the Grand Lobby of Berlin’s TV Tower. Simultaneously a companion Constellation Point painting measuring 6’5” X 19' is placed at the epicenter of Spain in Madrid on Calle Huertas.

From these three strategic locations Ms. Gurnee desires to research the subtle energy patterns created by the affiliation of these constellation point artworks.

ARTIST’S STATEMENT

The verb constellate means to unite in one splendor. It is from this definition that the Constellation Points evolved.

Each canvas panel invites the viewer to the settings of nature’s fruitful and profuse gardens. These high-keyed backdrops summon recollections of splendid places where people and nature unite. In these garden panoramas layered washes over monochromatic under painting techniques reveal pastoral views of the Hudson River; a subterranean mandolin concert; a pergola with magenta morning glories; red daisies amid yellow dahlias, and children standing amid garden beauty.

The format of these works implies an allegiance with treasured family tapestries and meaningful ancestral quilts. The three strategic locations chosen to display these panels are part of ongoing research of subtle energy patterns created by their intentional affinity and placement.

INTERVIEW WITH THE ARTIST

In 2006 Ms. Gurnee began exhibiting her paintings in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and most recently in New York at Feature Inc. Gallery, at 131 Allen Street.

In 2010 you will have 2 solo exhibitions in Manhattan, a special installation at the Kirchberg Castle in Germany, an exhibit in Zurich, and then you will exhibit Constellation Points in Berlin and Madrid. Do you care to comment on the year’s activities?

SG: My mind is always charged with ideas. After I formulate the procedures, I pause. If the elements begin to take shape around me, I continue. This year is offering bountiful support. The Fulgent Cadences show in March at Feature Inc., 131 Allen Street in New York was positively reviewed in The New York Times. These paintings were painted to enhance the decision-making process by balancing seven parts of the brain.

The elegant Castle in Kirchberg, Germany was the location of the first seed of the Constellation Points Series. An acrylic painting called Enthusiasm I painted over one titled Patience that was placed near Interlaken, Switzerland in the spring. This overlaid work connotes the elemental masculine and feminine aspects of creation. From those two points united, I am planning to place four new pieces in Manhattan. September 1 - October 30th at 153 East 53rd Street at Lexington Avenue. These four Constellation Points occupy almost 70 feet of wall space on two floors of the Gallery. Adjacent, at the Atrium is a two-story high Frank Stella curtain used at the Monte Carlo Ballet. Cobalt blue and primary hues dominate his work. My paintings are high-keyed in yellows, oranges and shades of red and magenta. I like the spaciousness of this location. In October other Constellation Points I have recently completed will be exhibited in Berlin at the TV Tower, and another point added in the center of Madrid.

Most of the paintings you have produced in the past few years have been abstract, what made you decide to produce a figurative representative work?

SG: I was trained as a scientific illustrator so I enjoy working on paintings with lots of detail to increase my awareness.

You were called a visionary, do you care to elaborate?

SG: I believe that a visionary is someone who sees things that others have not. In the Constellation Point Series, it is the unseen that creates new constructs.

How can interested people learn to widen their consciousness and create new constructs?

SG: In 2007 I was inspired to create a school to teach the fine art of such things. I named it Fields of Understanding’s School of Principled Consciousness. In this borderless classroom, English speaking students train their awareness skills in a self-determined year-long independent project. The school’s mission requires that each stage be accomplished using precepts that naturally enhance reflexive and participatory insight. Within this determined framework new constructs develop. After widening their realm of creative solutions, students develop new styles of relating to their world. Through state-of-the-art technology the international students formulate their projects supported by monthly e-books, downloadable audio lessons, teleconferences and personal coaching sessions. Several times a year students gather in the mountains of North Carolina for Group Forums and special group related projects. For more information please visit www.fieldsofunderstanding.com
